Five questions with Eileen Betteridge (Business Manager - Minster Manchester)

What initially attracted you to Minster?

I've been in the industry virtually my entire working life, so naturally, Minster was a name I was very familiar with. I'd heard about a new branch opening in Manchester and, through my network, got my foot in the door to interview for the position of Branch Sales Manager. I got it, and I've not looked back since. Building the branch from the ground up was a really unique opportunity, and seeing how our stock and team have grown over the years has been incredibly satisfying.

How would you describe the company culture at Minster?

The word I always use is 'different' - and I mean that in a good way. Having been in the industry a long time, I've seen lots of people come and go and experienced a lot of different cultures. The business has a good atmosphere, and everyone is approachable and friendly with issues and problems. There is never a feeling of us and them – instead, everyone works hard for each other. I think our customers feel this too, and it leads to our branches being welcoming and pleasant places to visit and work.

What opportunities for growth and professional development have you had with Minster?

Since I started with Minster, I've had aspirations to grow my career here, and I've been fully supported in doing that. More than anything, it's the people I have found most helpful and encouraging. I've been fortunate to have some amazing mentors – people I've learned from every day and shaped how we manage the branch today. I've always preferred that hands-on learning approach and Minster has that in spades. There are many fantastic people here, and if you're dedicated, there are many opportunities, too.

How does Minster celebrate achievements and recognise employee contributions?

This is a people-driven business, and much of what we do is reliant on the knowledge and skills of our colleagues. As a result, there's a conscious effort to recognise colleague contributions and to involve the whole business in celebrating achievements wherever possible. From our annual conference, which celebrates the successes of the wider business, to individual on-the-spot rewards for managers to recognise those going the extra mile, I really feel Minster colleagues are appreciated.

What makes Minster stand out as an employer?

For me, the culture sets us apart. I love that people are encouraged to be creative and to have ideas and go with them. You're allowed to be your own person and to bring your own style to the business. It goes a long way and ultimately contributes to many of our successes. There is also a real togetherness here. Even across our broad regional network, everyone is pulling in the same direction to maximise our customer output. It's different but in the best possible way.
