Five questions with Andy McKenna (Business Development Manager - London & SE Region)

What initially attracted you to Minster?

When I joined Minster, it was in its infancy. I had worked in the industry previously and, at 22, was looking to grow and develop a career in external sales. Almost 18 years on, this is the best decision I ever made. It was the perfect environment for me to grow. We were a small team with big ambitions, and I learned so much quickly. Even as we've grown, the mentality and culture has remained the same – we never stand still. That's a big pull.

How would you describe the company culture at Minster?

The biggest thing with Minster's culture is collaboration. With a nationwide branch network, teamwork and individual buy-in is massive – I think Minster has that in abundance. Everyone pulls together and supports one another. It's so important and keeps Minster operating the way we promise. Autonomy and ownership also have a significant role to play. From the beginning, I have felt empowered to think outside the box and take ownership of my decisions. It creates a thriving, creative workplace.

What opportunities for growth and professional development have you had with Minster?

When I started 18 years ago, it was to grow my career. With the backing of Minster, I've been able to do just that. Starting as an Area Sales Manager, my ambition was to become the best salesperson I could. Since then, with the support of Minster, I've held various positions across the business, growing personally and professionally in the process. Minster trusted and believed in me from the beginning, which has greatly impacted my career.

How does Minster celebrate achievements and recognise employee contributions?

Keeping our teams close is essential, and part of that is ensuring collective involvement in celebrating and recognising the achievements of the whole Minster team. Weekly bulletins and wider business events make sure everyone knows what's happening around the business. Anything from branch news to charity initiatives is shared here, giving a real community feel. You never feel out of the loop, which can only be positive.

What makes Minster stand out as an employer?

The biggest stand-out for me has always been our attitude. Minster has punched above its weight for a long time, and reactive, ambitious people have kept us on the right path. The business works – from top to bottom, there is a shared passion, and you can see that clearly in everything we do. There is a supportive and innovative environment here, and it will continue to drive us forward in the future.
